Aaron Alexis |
Remarks: The recent shooting at a shipyard in Washington, D.C, just a couple of miles down from the White House, which left 13 deaths (including the gunman), is a stark reminder that there are demons and monsters amongst us. What are monsters? In our case, those who have yearning desire to murder, rape, or kidnap, are, in many ways, monsters. The twists and turns of events building up to the shooting of innocent lives at this work place, demonstrated one thing; a need for a background check of people like this man Aaron Alexis who harbors extreme violent nature and didn't hide it. People who were closed to him recounted stories of his violent past, including pumping rounds into a tire of a car belonging to someone he had disagreement with. He was booted out of the Navy after firing a bullet through the floor of a neighbor and constantly harassing people around him. Thus, his employer prior to the shooting should have evaluated him and taking to consideration his violent past and his dishonorable discharge from the US Navy. All these shooters: the Virginia Tech, Fort Hood, Colorado Theater, Sandy Hook Elementary school shooter, and Shipyard shooters, have something in common - mental illness. But all that the politicians in Washington, D.C interested in is how to use these events to disarm the public although millions of gun owners are standing by their constitutional rights. What these law makers constantly failed to achieve is a strict evaluation of the mental status of those possessing these deadly weapons, and - for the most part - their records should be carefully scrutinized and their movements monitored. All they need to do is pass a law that prohibit people with heavy medication dependency, mental disturbing behavior, and people with extreme violent past involving firearms, from owing or carry weapons. This legislation will also include family members who protect and giving these criminals easy access to guns.
