Taliban soldiers |
The Taliban was extremely "powerful" in the implementation of Sharia Law in Afghanistan. In the late 1980s, after the Soviet left Afghanistan, United States and foreign fighters also left Afghanistan and Afghan soldiers who fought vehemently against the Soviet quickly formed an out of control regime based on Shari Law. The government lived and breathe terror on the people of Afghanistan, particularly women and children. They created the world's largest refugee camps, and hosted US enemies that were expelled from other countries for terrorist activities.
Following the bombing of US embassies in Africa, the governments in Africa such as Kenya, decided not give Al Qeada networks headed by none other than Osama Bin Laden, the boot. Taliban invited them. Since moving to Afghanistan, the Al Qeada network waged attacks against the US including the attack on USS Cole and eventually 9/11.
The US government, under George Bush, launched an all out war against Al Qeada and governments that harbor them. After months of refusing to turn over OBL, the US and NATO rolled into Afghanistan and in matter of weeks, Al Qeada disbanded and on the run, while the Taliban government crossed over to tribal areas in Pakistan. Since that day, the US and Taliban engaged in numerous battle in Afghanistan - many lost their lives on both sides.
I am not sure why the US decided to approach a government that harbored US enemies and accessory to various attacks against US properties overseas and US homeland. This is quite interesting!
It shows how the Obama administration views international issues. It seems that the US government under President Obama, just doesn't care about the ongoing danger the US soldiers facing in Afghanistan and is willing to sit down with one of the US worst enemies. This is incredibly dangerous because you can't pacify a regime that is so rooted in the culture of war of Afghanistan and a body of government that sees US as an evil and will continue fighting regardless of any US peaceful gestures. When a government fights based on religious beliefs, it is impossible to change their minds. To think that the Taliban would eventually lay their weapons down and come forward is stupidity on steroid.
